Overview
Sodium bicarbonate, commonly known as baking soda, is a salt composed of sodium cation and a bicarbonate anion., formula: NaHCO3, which is alkaline, white crystals, and odorless, more chemical properties please refer to IPCS.
Production
Sodium bicarbonate can be found in naturally occurring compounds, but it is more industrially manufactured, mainly from the reaction of sodium carbonate, water, and carbon dioxide: Na2CO3 + CO2 + H2O → 2 NaHCO3
There is a more controversial topic: Is it natural? It’s complicated, I don’t think we can do very much, even the FDA does not define what is natural.
Benefit
There are many uses for Sodium bicarbonate, such as medical treatment, cooking, fire extinguish, and cleaning.
This article only discusses its effect on skin cleaning (you can read to know how it works in bath bombs): antibacterial. Sodium bicarbonate has a weak disinfection function, so it has a certain effect on preventing skin infections.
It is worth noting that baking soda is believed to remove odors, but there is no evidence to show that it is effective.
Side effect
If used improperly, sodium bicarbonate can cause excessive dryness, redness, burning, and even worsening of the rash. If you have problems with your skin, it is best to consult a doctor before using it.
Please note: some people are allergic to Sodium bicarbonate.
